Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center

Celebrates the Opening of New Endoscopy Bronchoscopy Suite

WHAT:       A ribbon-cutting ceremony

and reception will be held to celebrate the opening

of the New Endoscopy Bronchoscopy Suites in the Herbert Irving Pavilion

at

Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. "We are doing at least 13,000

endoscopies a year and expect that number to increase by 15 percent or

more

every year.  The new suite allows us to almost double our volume of

endoscopy

and bronchoscopy procedures," says Andria Castellanos, Vice President of

Operations for Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.

WHEN:      Thursday, May 31, 2001

8:00-10:00 am

*Ribbon Cutting at 8:15 am*

WHERE:    Herbert Irving Pavilion, 13th floor

(formerly the Dana Atchley Pavilion)

161 Fort Washington Avenue (corner 165th Street), New York, NY 10032

The New Endoscopy Bronchoscopy Suites will be able to accommodate 23,000

endoscopy patients per year and will be equipped with eight endoscopy rooms,

two bronchoscopy rooms, 27 recovery beds, a family learning center, and

in-

and out-patient suites.

Dr. Peter Stevens, Director of the Endoscopy Center, says, "The expansion

will

not only help the colorectal screening effort but also will allow us to

increase the

number of procedures necessary to evaluate esophageal cancer and

gastroesophageal reflux disease."  According to Dr. Neil Schluger

of Pulmonary,

Allergy and Critical Care Medicine, the new bronchoscopy suite will also

“enable

the hospital to treat more patients with complicated lung disease, especially

those

patients being assessed for advanced lung disease and lung transplantation.”

In addition to the expanded medical capabilities, the design of the new

facility is

also focused on the patients’ comfort.  Some of its features are panoramic

views

of Manhattan from the recovery areas, and warm, light-filled suites painted

the

colors of the sun.  “The views from the recovery suite are really

breathtaking,”

says Castellanos, “and we hope they will have a calming effect on the patient.”

Patients are expected to be treated in the new space beginning July 2001.

Attendees at the event will include Dr. Herbert Pardes, President &

CEO,

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Dr. Peter Stevens, Director of the Endoscopy

Suite, and Dr. Neil Schluger, Clinical Chief, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy

and

Critical Care Medicine.
