Eight Top Medical Schools Raise Money For Children's Brain Tumor Research At Cumc With First Annual Softball Tournament

Teams from eight of the nation’s top medical centers - Columbia, Harvard, Cornell, Yale, NYU, Johns Hopkins, Mt. Sinai and Albert Einstein - will raise money for children’s brain tumor research at the 2005 Neurosurgery Charity Softball Tournament on Central Park’s Great Lawn.

WHEN: Saturday, June 11, 2005, 12:30 p.m.

WHERE: Great Lawn, Central Park Fields 3, 5, 6 and 7

WHO: Interns, residents and attendings from Columbia, Harvard, Cornell, Yale, NYU, Johns Hopkins, Mt. Sinai and Albert Einstein

WHY: The tournament will raise money for pediatric brain tumor research at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC). Pediatric brain tumors have surpassed leukemia as the leading cause of cancer death in children. Over 3,000 new cases of childhood primary brain tumors are diagnosed each year, with over 70% occurring in children less than 15 years of age. CUMC’s pediatric neurosurgeons are committed to furthering the understanding and advancing the treatment of brain tumors in children and adolescents.

Organized by Ricardo J. Komotar, M.D., neurosurgery resident at Columbia University Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, the tournament has already raised $70,000 for children’s brain tumor research, but they’re hoping to raise more. If interested in making a donation, please contact Dr. Komotar at 212-305-7056.
