Columbia University College Of Dental Medicine Faculty, Students, And Alumni Honored

NEW YORK, NY – June 13, 2006 – Several students, faculty members, and alumni of Columbia University’s College of Dental Medicine (CDM) recently were honored for their significant contributions to the fields of dentistry and dental education:

ALUMNI HONORS

Joseph Ciccio, CDM '83, Ortho 84, former College of Dental Medicine Alumni Association President, member of the Admissions committee, and volunteer faculty member in Orthodontics, received the College of Dental Medicine Alumni Medal for Meritorious Service. Dr. Ciccio was honored at this year’s CDM commencement ceremony.

FACULTY HONORS

Leslie W. Seldin, DDS, has been appointed Vice-Chairman of a national initiative called Dental Education: Our Legacy, Our Future. With the support of the American Dental Association, the ADA Foundation and a myriad of other partners, the vision of this effort is to promote and sustain excellence in the profession through a strong education system. The goal is to raise $500 million to address the challenges and issues facing dental education. It will raise the visibility of the need for support of

dental education so that the profession can secure its future. Dr. Seldin is a former 1st Vice-President of the American Dental Association and a past President of Dr. Joseph Ciccio, CDM'83, Ortho'84 the New York State Dental Association and the New York County Dental Association. He was the Chairman of the Oversight Committee of the Future of Dentistry Report that published a far reaching vision of the challenges facing the dental profession and how to address them.

Burton Edelstein, DDS, MPH, Division Director of Community Health received the Fones Memorial Medal, the Connecticut State Dental Society highest honor. The award has been given annually since 1941. Fones was the founder of the nation’s first school of dental hygiene in Bridgeport CT, which he established to expand access to dental care for low-income children and to encourage the idea of prevention. Dr. Edelstein also received the Edward Zegarelli Teaching Award at the May 18 CDM commencement ceremony for dedicated and inspired teaching and mentoring of dental students.

Thomas J. Cangialosi, DDS, Chairman of the Section of Growth and Development and Director of the Division of Orthodontics at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award of the Eastern Component of the Edward H. Angle Society at its annual meeting on April 29th at the St. Regis Hotel in Washington, D.C. The award was made in recognition of his extraordinary service to the specialty of orthodontics through his years of commitment as a full time orthodontic educator and administrator at Columbia University, his Directorship and Presidency of the American Board of Orthodontics, his Dr. Letty Moss-Salentijn presents the Edward Zegarelli Teaching Award to Dr. Burton Edelstein Chairmanship of the American Association of Orthodontists Council on Orthodontic Education, his service in organized orthodontics at the local and national levels and as a hard-working member of the Angle Society.

STUDENT HONORS

Carmel Dudley, CDM 07, was selected as one of ten students nationally for new Academic Dental Careers Fellowship, a program focused on creating new dental educators. The fellowship, created by the American Dental Education Association and the American Association of Dental Research with funding from the ADA Foundation, includes a $4,000 stipend to support travel and lodging to a training session and the ADEA annual session in New Orleans in 2007.

Wayne E Stephens, CDM 09, has been appointed to be the Washington National Health Policy Extern at the American Student Dental Association.

David Tavelin, CDM 07, was appointed a Contributing Editor at ASDA.
