Dr. Fischbach is the former executive vice president for health and biomedical sci¬ences and dean of the faculty of medicine at Columbia University. He is also the former director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke of the National Institutes of Health. A neuroscientist by training, Dr. Fischbach pioneered the use of nerve cell cultures to study the electrophysiology, morphology, and biochemistry of developing nerve-muscle and inter-neuronal synapses.
