Jeffrey Lieberman Receives Adolf Meyer Award From American Psychiatric Association

New York, NY—(May 29, 2007) —Dr. Jeffrey Lieberman, Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center and Director of the New York State Psychiatric Institute, is the recipient of the prestigious Adolf Meyer Award. The award was presented formally at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) on Tuesday, May 22, 2007 in San Diego.

Established in 1957, the Adolf Meyer Award honors outstanding investigators from abroad and in the United States. Dr. Lieberman’s research focus has been the neurobiology, pharmacology and treatment of schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders. In selecting Dr. Lieberman, the Scientific Program Committee sought to acknowledge his seminal work on first episode psychosis and early intervention. This work has advanced our understanding of the natural history and phenomenology of schizophrenia as well as its pathophysiological basis, and the mechanism of action and clinical effectiveness of antipsychotic drugs.

In addition, he is the Principal Investigator of the Clinical Antipsychotic Trials of Intervention Effectiveness Research Program (CATIE). One of the most significant studies carried out to date, CATIE was the first study directly comparing a first-generation antipsychotic with several second-generation antipsychotics in a large number of patients with chronic schizophrenia.

Dr. Lieberman’s Adolf Meyer Award Lecture, presented as part of his award, was titled, The Three Stages of Schizophrenia: Can Early Detection and Intervention Change Illness Course and Prevent Disability? He joins an esteemed list of past recipients, including last year’s awardee, Dr. Aaron T. Beck, the world-renowned “father of cognitive therapy.”
