Ones to Watch: Rheumatology

This month’s Ones to Watch focuses on three doctors from the Division of
Rheumatology: Anca D. Askanase, MD, MPH; Elana J. Bernstein, MD, MsC; and Laura Geraldino, MD, MPH.

The division welcomes Dr. Anca D. Askanase as clinical director of  its Lupus Center and director of rheumatology clinical trials. Dr. Askanase will focus on lupus, both clinically and from a research perspective.  Previously, she worked at NYU Langone Medical Center. She sees patients at Herbert Irving Pavilion-2, ColumbiaDoctors Riverdale, and ColumbiaDoctors Midtown locations.

Dr. Elana J. Bernstein is an instructor of medicine. She will also be a member of the medical staff at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx, where she will participate in the mentoring of rheumatology fellows as they begin rotation in July 2014. Here, she will focus on scleroderma, both clinically and from a research perspective. Dr. Bernstein completed her fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery. She will practice a half day at Herbert Irving Pavilion-2.

Dr. Laura Geraldino is an assistant professor of medicine at CUMC. Her areas of interest include autoimmune diseases, systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus) and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as the application of musculoskeletal ultrasonography in arthritic disorders. Dr. Geraldino was recently awarded a Rheumatology Research Foundation Scientist Development Award to study a potential relationship between myocardial inflammation and conduction abnormalities in patients with lupus. Dr. Geraldino sees patients at Herbert Irving Pavilion-2.
