P&S Faculty Receive Awards at 2014 Commencement

P&S Dean Lee Goldman, MD, and Columbia Trustee Kenneth Forde, MD’59, presented seven faculty members with teaching and research awards during the P&S Commencement on May 21.

Distinguished Service Awards

The Distinguished Service Awards recognize individuals who have served the College of Physicians & Surgeons with the greatest distinction, bringing honor to the institution, to its alumni, and to the profession itself.

P&S Distinguished Service Awards were presented to Charles S.H. Young, PhD, professor emeritus of microbiology, and John M. Driscoll Jr., MD, the Reuben S. Carpentier Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics.

Charles W. Bohmfalk Awards The Charles W. Bohmfalk Awards were established through the generosity of John Frederick and Alice Bohmfalk in memory of a graduate of the P&S Class of 1884. The awards recognize distinguished teaching in the pre-clinical and clinical years.

Charles W. Bohmfalk Awards were presented to Henry M. Spotnitz, MD, the George H. Humphreys II Professor of Surgery (for teaching in the preclinical years), and David L. Diuguid, MD, the Hope Sheridan Associate Professor of Hematology (in Medicine) at CUMC (for teaching in the clinical years).

Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award

The Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation is presented each year to a physician who has demonstrated compassionate and devoted patient care and who is a humanistic role model for students and young physicians.

The Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award  was given to Rita Charon, MD, PhD, professor of medicine at CUMC.

Dr. Harold & Golden Lamport Research Awards

The Dr. Harold and Golden Lamport Research Awards were initiated in 1983 to honor outstanding young researchers in the basic and clinical sciences.

The Dr. Harold and Golden Lamport Research Award in basic sciences was given to Raul Rabadan, PhD, assistant professor of biomedical informatics and systems biology. David J. Lederer, MD, associate professor of medicine and epidemiology in pediatrics, received the Dr. Harold and Golden Lamport Research Award in clinical sciences. (Dr. Lederer could not attend the ceremony).
