“Road Map to College” Conference for Parents

Diversity in medical schools depends in part on diversity in undergraduate colleges. For high school students who do not have the advantage of parents or guardians experienced in navigating the college application process, the “Road Map to College” conference at Columbia University Medical Center helped parents learn about various colleges, the college application process, scholarships and other financial aid, help available to ease a student’s transition to college, and programs that help students explore career paths during college.

This first parent conference was held Nov. 1 in the Hammer Health Sciences Center, It was sponsored by Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons’ Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs and the Bronx-based nonprofit H.E.A.L.T.H. for Youths.

The sponsors plan to make the conference an annual event.
