Emmi Aguillard: Her Teammates Get Her Through

Emmi Aguillard, 24, will be running her first marathon on Nov. 1. A long-time competitive runner who specializes in short and middle distances, she says the training has given her new respect for marathoners.

When did you start running, and why? And what is the longest distance you have run?

I first started running in middle school when I joined my sixth grade cross country team, mainly because all of my friends were doing it. I stuck with it through high school and earned a scholarship to compete at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA (NCAA DI Track and Field and Cross Country programs). Aside from the training runs that I've done, the farthest distance I've raced is a half marathon.

Why are you running the marathon?

I time-qualified for the sub-elite group last year at the NYRR Staten Island Half. I'm pretty excited for that - apparently we get a special bus to the start and most importantly, our own bathrooms!

What’s your goal on race day?

I'll be happy if I qualify for Boston!

Does this distance— or this particular race— have any special meaning for you?

Definitely the race. I couldn't be more stoked to make my marathon debut in New York City! It's one of the best marathons in the world. Training for such a long distance has been tough, both mentally and physically. I feel like I'm much more of a 5K/10K type of girl. But I'm gaining a huge amount of respect for marathoners.

What gets you through your long training runs?

My friends/teammates get me through. I run with the Dashing Whippets, a running club in Manhattan. There is no way that I'd be where I am right now if it wasn't for them! Moving to New York from Louisiana was a big adjustment for me, but I've made some of my closest friends here in the city outside of my program at Columbia from my running club; it's awesome to have a group of people who are as crazy as you to help you stay motivated and most importantly, to make running fun.

Have you had any particularly special moments during your runs?

This Saturday I ran 22 miles, which is the farthest I've ever run in my life.

I also work part time as a pacer for Nike Run Club. There have been a few times when I've been running with someone who is just getting into the sport and it's incredible to see how hard work and commitment pay off. And most importantly, this reminds me of why I fell in love with running to begin with. I'm also pretty competitive. I love racing in the New York Road Runners races!

Do you see any relationship between your work and your running?

My running career actually played a huge role in my decision to go to physical therapy school. I'm the worst person in the world at sitting still, and knew that I wanted a job in which I could be up on my feet helping people. I'd love to one day specialize in rehab, specifically for runners. We are constantly getting hurt and in need of physical therapy!
