Harriet Llyod, Senior Staff Associate, Department of Ophthalmology

Harriet Llyod, Senior Staff Associate, Department of Ophthalmology

Since joining P&S in 2010, Ms. Lloyd has made herself an indispensable contributor to the Department of Ophthalmology in ways both academic and administrative. She conducts research projects, manages accounts, assists with grant applications and research papers, and has presented at national ophthalmology meetings. As one nominator puts it: “Harriet is an ideal colleague: exceptionally smart and competent and always helpful. She has a knack for getting things done – quietly and perfectly.”

Ms. Lloyd has co-authored seven papers in peer-reviewed journals since joining P&S, and 20 throughout her career. She also co-manages a popular annual ophthalmology course that draws international speakers and attendees. Beyond her professional skills, she is a pleasure to work with, says a nominator: “Harriet embodies the type of individual we would all like to have as an employee, a colleague, and a friend.”

A Conversation with Ms. Lloyd

Tell us what you do at the P&S and how long you have been working here.

I’ve been at CUMC for almost six years (five years and seven months, actually), and my title is senior staff associate. This basically means I’m a jack-of-all-trades. I do a lot of administrative work, such as grant preparation, account management, and the like, but I also get to participate in research, and I’m responsible for all the animal handling, cell culturing, histology and the microscopy in my lab.

How did you come to P&S and/or this role?

I’ve been working for Ronald H. Silverman, PhD, for over 20 year (21 years and seven months to be exact), and I moved with him to CUMC when he came onboard from Weill Cornell.

What do you like most about your role?

I really like the flexibility of my role, as I can do both lab management and lab experiments. And I really like the people I work with, both in the lab and in the department. I have found my coworkers to be more than willing to lend a hand when needed and are just nice people to be around.

Tell us about your life outside work.

Is this a trick question? I thought we were all expected to do almost nothing but work! Kidding. I am an avid reader, I love to bake, enjoy traveling, and I dote on my nieces and nephew and cats.
