Brian Marr to Lead Newly Re-Established Ophthalmic Oncology Service at Columbia

Brian P. Marr, MD

Brian P. Marr, MD, professor of ophthalmology at CUMC, joins the Department of Ophthalmology this month to head the ophthalmic oncology service. He will practice at ColumbiaDoctors Third Avenue at 880 Third Avenue and the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute at 635 W. 165th Street.

“Over the past decade, we’ve built upon our rich 150-year legacy and developed a dynamic academic ophthalmology program at Columbia University. Taking yet another step in this direction, it is with great pride that we announce the recruitment of Dr. Brian Marr, an internationally renowned ophthalmic oncologist, and the re-establishment of the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute’s ophthalmic oncology service,” said George A. “Jack” Cioffi, MD, the Jean and Richard Deems Professor, Edward S. Harkness Professor, and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, and president of ColumbiaDoctors.

Dr. Marr has comprehensive experience in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of ocular tumors including intraocular tumor resection, laser, radiation, and chemotherapy procedures. He has helped devise thousands of complex treatments for tumors of the eye, eyelid, orbit, and conjunctiva for his adult and pediatric patients. Currently, Dr. Marr is a collaborator on a Columbia University clinical trial for a first-of-its-kind, new class of drug treatment for uveal melanoma.

Dr. Marr will lead a team that offers translational clinical care in the areas of ophthalmic oncology, ophthalmology, radiation oncology, and pediatrics, with an emphasis on retinoblastomas. The new service line will distinguish itself in the medical community by bridging the divide between ophthalmology and oncology, providing world-class care at one campus.

Dr. Cioffi added that Dr. Marr’s appointment “marks another department milestone similar to that of Algernon B. Reese, founder in 1947 of the department’s first retinoblastoma, pediatric and adult ocular tumor clinics. We are thrilled that Dr. Marr is joining our faculty.” For referrals, contact Dr. Marr at (212) 305-9535, or email
