The public television series, “Healthy Minds with Dr. Jeffrey Borenstein,” has been nominated for a 2018 New York Emmy Award. Jeffrey Borenstein, MD, associate clinical professor of psychiatry at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, developed the series and serves as its host.

The show, which is nominated for best series in the category of Public/Current/Community Affairs, aims to remove the stigma of mental illness and offer a message of hope through inspiring personal stories. Guest experts on the show shed light on common psychiatric conditions and share cutting-edge information on new treatment options.

Several VP&S faculty members appear in the show’s new season, including Anne Marie Albano, PhD, co-clinical director of Columbia’s Youth Anxiety Center; Jeffrey Lieberman, MD, chair of psychiatry; and Harold Pincus, MD, vice chair of psychiatry.

This season’s episodes examine some of the most pressing public health issues such as the opioid epidemic, depression, and the rising rate of anxiety and other mental health issues among youth.

“One in five people suffer from a diagnosable mental illness. When we openly discuss mental health issues, it goes a long way toward lessening the fear and shame that often prevent people from seeking help,” Borenstein says. “The goal of Healthy Minds is to inspire conversations about mental illness and provide understandable information and resources for our viewers. People should not suffer in silence, because with help, there is hope.”

The show is produced by the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, the nation's largest private funder of mental health research grants; Borenstein is the foundation’s president and CEO.

“Healthy Minds with Dr. Jeffrey Borenstein” airs on public television stations across the nation and is also available online.
